Khentii Mountains

In the morning we will head east of UB, reaching Khentii Mountains. The Khentii Mountains are a mountain range in northern Mongolia’s Töv and Khentii provinces. The chain crosses the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area and includes Burkhan Khaldun, Mongolia’s holiest mountain and the birthplace of Genghis Khan. The range serves as a watershed between the Arctic and Pacific Ocean basins (via Lake Baikal). The Onon, Kherlen, and Tuul rivers all originate in the range.

We will arrive at the horse breeding family before noon. Our host family lives on the banks of the Tuul River. At noon we will have lunch at our horse breeding family. We will meet our horseman, load our gear and food on pack horses and set off for 3 days’ horse riding in the Khentii Mountains. We will ride through lush meadows for a couple of hours towards the Terelj River valley. Then, we will have dinner and camp on the Terelj River bank.

Horseback Riding Tour in Khentii Mountains

Today we will ride in the direction of the Princess Monastery, also known as Gunjiin Sum, surrounded by lush forest. It was once a massive monastery founded by a Mongolian lord in honor of his wife in the 18th century. Sadly, the main temple and a portion of the wall are all that is left today.

We’ll load our packhorses with our belongings after breakfast. The Mongolian horses are tiny but mighty, and their strength will astound you. Along the base of the mountain ranges, we’ll travel into the valley.   This incredible three-day trip will take us across taiga, the moose’s natural habitat. The landscape is characteristic of Siberia. We’ll make our way up the mountain through thick woodland. Look out for deer, wolves, moose, and bears.

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park back to Ulaanbaatar

Today is the last day of our adventure through big valleys, mountains, and green forests. Enjoy your final day’s horse trek and the breathtaking view of the valley stretching out to the Tuul River.

After lunch, we’ll go on a sightseeing tour of Terelj National Park. Turtle Rock, Aryaval Monastery, and a small meditation monastery at the foot of the mountain, will be our first stop. The Genghis Khan Monument will be our final stop. The latter is a massive aluminium statue of Genghis Khan mounted on his horse. It is possible to ascend to the top of the monument, where you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. A small museum provides a thorough overview of the history of the Great Mongol Empire, including the succession lines of the great Khans and their invasions.

The time has come to leave and drive back to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital. You can use your free afternoon to see as you fit. You could always go see a lovely cultural show and admire the contortionists while watching colorful and rhythmic Mongolian dances.
